Power to the people

The annual Dragon Boat Festival takes place at Bewl Water in East Sussex on Saturday 13 September. The law firm Covington & Burling LLP have entered a boat into this year's race, and will be raising money for their favourite charity- SolarAid!

The team of rowers consists of Covington and Burling and Solarcentury staff. Their fundraising target is £2,000, but the partners at the law firm have very generously agreed to match staff donations, so watch this space!

SolarAid would like to wish all the team good luck, and say a huge thank you to all involved.

SolarAid went along to another festival over the bank holiday weekend.

This time we were at Shambala, in Northamptonshire, with our partners Firefly Solar. SolarAid's Head of Fundraising, Ruth Mantle, was there to spread the word about the charity and its work.

A team of 22 volunteers were at the Sunrise Field at The Big Chill Festival last weekend. They were there to tell festival-goers all about the charity and its work.

Over the weekend the volunteers showed how SolarAid's micro solar panels work, demonstrated the solar lanterns, and they also hosted a geodome (aka the 'Sun Hut') where they offered a solar-powered mobile phone charging service (all money raised went to SolarAid projects in Africa!) and they entertained people by playing music from the unique solar stereo, powered by their 300w solar system!

It's been a busy summer for SolarAid. During the previous weekend, four SolarAiders were also at WOMAD in Wiltshire. Here are some photos:

A team of four dedicated SolarAid supporters have raised well over £4,000 after cycling from London to Cornwall in just 21 hours on 26 July, during the hottest weekend of the year!

SolarAid would like to thank the four guys- David, Chris, Ady and Alec- for their amazing efforts.

Employees raised $1,000 (£500) for SolarAid from a raffle for Canadian Environment Week. $1,000 is the highest amount ever raised for an environmental charity.

The donation will enable us to extend our micro solar work to South America.

Thank you to all who took part in the raffle and John Bowes for coordinating the fundraising.
