Achievements

Microsolar
SolarAid Kenya started operations in January 2009 by recruiting and training SunnyMoney entrepreneurs to bring clean and affordable light into the homes of Kenya's poorest communities. Although the office is in Nairobi, entrepreneurs are largely based in Western Kenya (North Bongoma and Mahuro Bay). Sales of solar products have also reached Migori, Nyatike, Royia, Sotik, Tarime and Rachuonyu. In total 1387 microsolar units have been sold.

Macrosolar
The macrosolar programme began in August 2009 with the installation of solar systems on schools and clinics as the priority. In order to ensure longevity, the training of local people to maintain the panels and set up income-generating activities has been key to a succesful first year. Still in its early stages of development, the Kenyan team have installed 30 macrosolar systems. In addition, the 'Solar Roller', a mobile education centre and solar cinema, raises awareness of renewable energy in rural Kenya.

In Zambia there's a pressing need to provide a minimum of energy for poor families. Energy options are limited to kerosene and candles for lighting and wood for cooking. Rising kerosene prices across the world mean that people living in rural Zambia are being forced to pay more and more each week to light their homes. We provide people with affordable, sustainable and clean energy options, reducing reliance on CO2 emitting fuels such as kerosene and disposable batteries.

Achievements

Macrosolar
SolarAid Zambia began in July 2008 with the focus on installing solar systems on schools, health clinics and community centres near the Lusaka base. Installations are now carried out as far west as Mongu and as far east as Chipata. In total, 46 installations have taken place, bringing clean and affordable light to off-grid communities throughout southern Zambia.

Microsolar
In July 2009 SolarAid Zambia began its microsolar campaign, training SunnyMoney entrepreneurs to distribute solar products throughout rural communities as a replacement for the burning of toxic kerosene for light. There are now 15 active SunnyMoney entrepreneurs with their own independent and sustainable microsolar businesses. In total over 1,500 microsolar units have been sold, a significant achievement.

This project is in partnership with TRAID, a ground breaking charity committed to protecting the environment and reducing world poverty through recycling, delivering educational programmes and campaigning.

Achievements

Microsolar
The majority of people living in rural Malawi do not have access to electricity and are forced to burn kerosene for lighting. Kerosene is harmful to health, dangerous and increasingly expensive. In March 2008 SolarAid Malawi was set up to replace kerosene lamps with SunnyMoney microsolar.

The team began by educating poor people in rural Malawi with the business and marketing tools necessary to become SunnyMoney entrepreneurs. With training, entrepreneurs have crated their own independent and sustainable microsolar businesses. In total, 5812 microsolar units have been sold, an outstanding achievement.

Macrosolar
In Spring 2010, the team began their macrosolar programme, and have since installed 18 schools, health clinics and community centres with clean and affordable solar-powered lighting systems. Operations will be scaling up throughout 2010 and into 2011.

Macrosolar
SolarAid Tanzania installed their first macrosolar panelling system on a school in January 2009. Now 64 schools, health clinics and community centres have benefitted from clean and affordable energy.
